Financing your period abroad

When you are planning your exchange or internship period abroad, it is advisable to make a budget and consider the financial requirements of each destination.

Your budget can consist of the following:

  1. LUT grants for exchange studies and international internship
  2. KELA student financial aid
  3. Possible grants from private foundations
  4. Your own savings

Tuition fees

As an exchange student from LUT, you do not pay tuition fees in your exchange university. During the exchange, you can register either as attending or non-attending at LUT – the choice is yours.

In some cases the exchange university might require some additional fees or a mandatory insurance. Each university has their own requirements and they will inform the applicants after LUT has nominated them.

LUT grants for exchange studies and internship abroad

LUT grants are determined by the exchange programme, the destination and the length of the exchange period. The Erasmus+ programme, funded by the European Commission, offers also inclusion grants for students with fewer opportunities or special needs. Erasmus+ program also supports environmentally friendly travelling by awarding a Green Travel grant.

Kela benefits abroad

It is possible to receive Kela financial aid also during your exchange or internship abroad. Consult Kela for more information, and remember to notify Kela about your stay abroad via the Kela website. All inquiries concerning Kela benefits should be directed to Kela.

Grants from private foundations

Some associations and foundations offer grants for exchange studies. Below you can find examples – contact each institution directly for any inquiry (LUT has no knowledge of or relation to them):

SYL
AURORA
– funding opportunities for science and arts
Otsakorpi Foundation – for students studying in Lappeenranta

You can apply for grants from as many places as you want. If you are not from Finland, look for private foundations in your home country.
