Research ethics and publishing

LUT University requires all researchers to comply with good scientific practice when conducting or publishing research. The university is also committed to The Guidelines of Responsible Conduct of Research and Procedures for Handling Allegations of Misconduct in Finland produced by the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity (TENK). The document defines good scientific practice and violations of it in multidisciplinary terms. Chinese, Spanish and Russian editions of the guidelines are also available on TENK web pages.

Ms Victoria Kompanets is the TENK research integrity advisor at LUT University. Her  tasks include giving advice to researchers and other staff at LUT University. A discussion with the adviser is absolutely confidential. You may contact the advisor for example in case there is a suspicion of a violation of responsible conduct of research or if you have been suspected of a violation yourself.

Ms. Kompanets is also the contact person in case your need an ethical review or statement. Further information: LUT intra (restricted access).

Publishing research results

Research includes openness and comparability. Open Access publishing is today an essential part of the publishing process. In its strategy LUT is committed to promote open science and increase the number of scientific co-authored publications.

In order to prevent authorship disputes, the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity TENK has drawn up recommendations for researchers working in Finland on how to agree on the authorship of research co-publications. These recommendations serve as a general guide, which is meant to be considered alongside the established practices of the discipline in question.

Including publications in your dissertation

If you intend to include a publication in your doctoral dissertation, remember to check and ask the publisher's permission to do that. It is recommendable to do that as soon as the article has been published. More information about copyright issues from the LUT Academic Library.

You should also read the instructions on including a publication in more than one scientific postgraduate degree thesis from the LUT dissertation regulations (see Files). Authors must agree on this in writing already when submitting the article.
