Reports: LUT students' exchange reports (all universities – even those that aren't available for application now)

Agreements
 

1. Select the upcoming academic year (when your exchange would begin) to see the universities LUT has an active agreement with. 

Note that if you are applying in April's supplementary application round, the portal will show also the universities where all the available places were filled up during the January application round. To see only the destinations that are available in the supplementary round, you need to view the actual application form (published when the application period starts).
 

2. Make other selections relevant for you: study level, teaching language

With some universities we have several agreements (for technical reasons). Don't let this confuse you and instead
1. click on the handshake symbol below the word Agreements (on the row for each university)
2. on the pop-up, click on the 'i' (info) symbol

Now you can access the fact sheet which often contains information on courses and language proficiency requirements. Updated fact sheets are not available for some universities. There are also links to the homepage of the university and the webpage for exchange or international students. It is recommended to go through both of them to have as much information on the university as possible.

Name of program tells you which grant you will be receiving. Learn more about grants here.
 

Note that there is a separate application form link, even though both the portal and the application form use the Mobility-Online platform. Read the application instructions and the FAQ here.

• Most universities offer courses in English but some have a wider selection in the local language.
• LUT also has several partner universities that do not offer any English-taught courses! Applying to such universities without appropriate language skills is the most common reason for rejection of exchange study applications. Apply for a destination that suits your language abilities.
• If LUT Mobility-Online Portal lists English and another language as the teaching languages, it means that it is possible to take 30 ECTS using English only. The other language is just an extra option for those who have high proficiency in that language too. It does not mean that you are required to know both languages.

Remember to also check the updated language proficiency requirements on each university's website. 

• Commercial language proficiency certificates (TOEFL, IELTS) are required more often outside Europe than in Europe. The test fee is paid by the applicant.
• For LUT exchange study application, no language proficiency certificate is needed. If any certificate is needed later, it will be sent to the receiving university only.

Each university offers courses for LUT students only in the study fields mentioned on LUT Mobility-Online Portal. For their own students, the same university might offer other study fields as well - however, the exchange study agreements often do not cover all study fields.

• LUT students majoring on the study fields list for each university in the portal are prioritized on the selection.
• If one of the study fields mentioned is engineering, it means that all LUT engineering students are treated equally, and that there are courses in several subfields of engineering available.
• However, also other LUT students (even if your major isn't listed as a study field for a certain university) may apply, if you are capable of taking courses in that particular study field. For example,
  • If you're a technology student interested in basic business courses, a university offering business studies only on master's level is not suitable for you.
  • But a technology or social sciences student can take basic business courses, provided that a) they have the prerequisite knowledge (if any is required), and b) such courses can be included in their LUT degree (consult your study counsellor for details, perhaps business studies could form a minor subject for your LUT degree)

Research each university's course offerings

It is the responsibility of each applicant to research up-to-date information on the types of courses offered for exchange students. Helpful search phrases to find the information on each university's websites include incoming exchange and fact sheet. This can be found on the university website, or the information will be passed on to students after they receive the admission letter some weeks before the exchange.

Usually a detailed study plan can be made only after the receiving university has confirmed your exchange. In your LUT exchange study application it is enough to make a general description of the type of studies you would like to take, or you can use past or current semester's course lists to make a preliminary plan (if such information can be found).

Please note that LUT staff does not have detailed information on past or future course offerings.

Your study counsellor will evaluate your study plan after you have been selected for exchange studies – keep them informed about your exchange study plans. They can also help you plan where in your LUT degree you can include the courses abroad: major or minor subject, selective or language courses?

You can apply for exchange either for autumn or spring semester, if not mentioned otherwise. Your study counsellor can help you plan the best timing. 

The academic calendar often differs from the Finnish one: semester start and end dates, and even the number of semesters (it's not always two) may differ. To plan your exchange, it is of course essential to know whether your semester starts in January, February, March or April - or in September/October/November. It is also common for the autumn semester to end in January or February. Detailed information can be found on each university's website using the search term academic calendar. 

The duration of our non-European exchanges (and Norek Network exchanges in Europe) is always a single semester only. If you prefer to apply for a full academic year, you may do so by opting for Erasmus+ exchange in Europe instead. However, should there be a large number of applicants for any specific Erasmus+ university, all applicants will be offered only one semester, to maximize the number of students we can send for exchange.

GE3 (The IIE Global E3 Program) is a consortium-based exchange program for undergraduate engineering students to study abroad. More information in the network's web page.

The program includes over 70 member universities in more than 20 countries, including Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and the United States. Students of the LUT University should primarily apply to destinations outside Europe.

Applying to GE3 network universities is done during the regular LUT exchange study application period in January. On the LUT Mobility-Online application form, GE3 will appear as one of potential destinations (study field engineering, country "other"). In the additional information field, you'll need to name 3–5 GE3 universities (naming less than 3 will lead to automatic rejection). If you get selected by LUT to apply to a GE3 university as a LUT candidate, you will then later make a separate application in the GE3 application system by March 1.

Use the Participating Universities search feature "Program Discovery" to review university brochures. It is important to consider the fields of study and fields of engineering that partner schools offer.

Applications are reviewed by the IIE Global E3 Program representatives and offered to an appropriate host institution. Not all applicants can be guaranteed placement or placement at preferred university. However, all students will be placed at the best institutions IIE has determined are appropriate based on applicants field of study and desired work.

The Institutional Capacity Chart contains universities with flexible and limited exchange availabilities. "Flexible" universities are easier to get selected for, whereas "limited" take only a few exchange students annually. It is highly recommended to choose also flexible host universities to your list of preferred destinations. 

When applying to study in the US, the student must meet TOEFL/IELTS requirements of the US host institution. These tests are subject to a change and they are not organized by LUT. The test should be done by the application deadline. It is the applicant's responsibility to find out about the fees and timing of the tests and to take the test before the GE3 application deadline of March 1.

This programme is available only for students that are studying in one of the LUT-HEBUT Double Degree programmes. The application period is in 19.–25.11.2025

All applicants will be notified of the results by 18.12.2025. 

• If you are not selected for the HEBUT summer programme, you are still eligible to apply for regular student exchange in other universities later. HEBUT is not among the regular exchange study destinations.

First, LUT makes the pre-selection according to the following criteria. Then, HEBUT will interview the students that passed the pre-selection and select maximum of 30 students.

Pre-selection:

Priority Level 1: LUT-HEBUT Double Degree students that have started studying Mandarin
Priority Level 2: LUT-HEBUT Double Degree students that have not yet started Mandarin studies by the time of application

If less than 30 level 1 students apply, also level 2 students may be considered. Previously, only level 1 students passed the pre-selection. HEBUT will interview only the students that passed the pre-selection.

Note: the application process has two stages: after filling in the 1st part, you will get an email with a link to complete the 2nd part. The application is not valid without both steps fully completed before the deadline! Late and incomplete applications will be ignored.

The HEBUT summer programme follows the same application and other processes as the regular student exchange. All selected applicants receive the regular exchange study grant for non-European partner universities, 1500 €. The grant is paid by 30.6.2026, for students that have applied for the grant by 1.6.2026 on LUT Mobility-Online.

The summer programme will be organised from Mid-May to Mid-August. Selected applicants will be able to enter the actual exact dates on LUT Mobility-Online around April-May, when filling in the grant application form - before that the system will show other (system default) dates which can be ignored.
