Exchange study selection criteria

Below you can find detailed information about the exchange study selection criteria. Please contact your study programme's study counsellor if you wish to discuss whether and when it would be possible to go abroad or how the exchange study would fit in your LUT degree.

  • ranking number is calculated for all applicants, and the selection is based mainly on this score.

  • However, each university is targeted for certain degree programmes or study fields (as mentioned on eLUT descriptions for each university), and the students in these fields are prioritized. In other words, a student with a lower ranking number might win the selection against a higher-scoring student from other degree programmes. Students majoring in other fields can still be selected if there are not enough applicants for the fields mentioned for each university.
  • Grade average should be at least 2.0.
  • Bachelor students have to complete their first year before starting their exchange.
  • If you started your LUT studies directly in a Master's Degree Programme, only the credits completed during your first LUT semester will be taken into account when considering your pace of studying (recommended amount is at least 27 ECTS per semester).
  • You cannot apply for exchange in your home country.
  • The Head of Degree Programme may reject your application, if it would mean postponing your graduation or the exchange period does not suit your LUT degree. Doing your thesis while on exchange is not possible, and the credits earned from the thesis can not be included in your exchange study learning agreement. You should aim to complete 30 ECTS credits per semester at the receiving university – simultaneous LUT online courses will not be counted towards this amount.

  • Accepting the exchange study offer means commitment. After accepting the offer, canceling is only possible in exceptional situations, for example due to health-related reasons. However, matters related to work or change of study plans are usually not considered as such reasons.

A notification about the cancellation must always be sent to both LUT and the receiving university.

Applicants that cancel their exchange without a valid reason, or fail to notify both universities about the cancellation, can not be selected for exchange study during the next application round.

Ranking number:

LUT Mobility-Online will calculate your ranking number when you enter the required information in the application form.

Ranking number = credits x grade average / number of semesters present

  • The number of credits is the amount stated on the Transcript of Records included in your LUT Mobility-Online application. Courses registered later than this will not be included in the calculation.
  • Grade average is marked on your Transcript of Records (downloadable on Sisu).
  • The current semester will also be included in the number of semesters. NB! One academic year has two semesters.
  • If you started at LUT directly in a Master's programme and still on your first year: mark 1,5 as the number of semesters present.

If you have held at least one of the positions listed below, one semester will be deducted from your number of semester – this will improve your ranking number. The application system has a section to mark this, and the system will calculate it accordingly. Report also the timing on the Any other remarks field.

  • Tutor for international students, tutoring secretary, study advisor, student union board member, chairperson of a guild, LUT Summer School secretary, ESN (Erasmus Student Network) Lappeenranta chairperson.

Going abroad for a second time?

  • It is possible, if the first exchange was during your bachelor studies, and the second one would be during your master's studies – if your studies have advanced on schedule and you finished at least 30 ECTS during the first exchange.
  • However, it is not possible to go on exchange twice during bachelor studies or twice during master's studies.
  • It is not possible to go on exchange to the same university twice.
  • Consult your degree programme's study counsellor about the possibility to go abroad for a second time.
