Courses outside these catalogues are reserved for degree students only so you cannot unfortunately choose those courses as an exchange student.

Kindly note that if you are nominated to LUT University as a Bachelor‑level exchange student, you cannot select Master‑level courses.

If you are at the master level, you need to choose your courses from the course catalogues corresponding to your study area (Technology, Business Administration, or Social Sciences).

You can select any courses listed in the course catalogue that corresponds to your study level, so combining multiple study fields is possible. However, please note that your home institution must also approve your course selection, and they may have their own restrictions.

In other words, at the bachelor level you may take courses from any study field, as long as the course is included in the bachelor-level exchange student course catalogue.

If you are at the master level, you need to choose your courses from the course catalogues corresponding to your study area (Technology, Business Administration, or Social Sciences).

A Learning Agreement and a Study plan are the same thing. It is a list of courses you're planning to study during your stay at LUT University. You need to look at our course lists and choose which courses you want to study during your exchange.

Note also that there can be changes in course lists still at the beginning of the semester. 

Very often there will be some changes in the Learning Agreements. Our incoming exchange coordinator help students with the course choices when the students arrive to our university.

The estimated workload for full time student in one academic year is 60 ECTS credits, meaning 30 ECTS credits per semester (and that is the recommended amount). Please note that a credit does not refer to the duration of a course, but to the estimated amount of work required. One credit refers to approximately 27 hours of work by the student. Credits are used to define the extent of a given course.

The minimum accepted amount per semester is 20 ECTS credits.

There is no specific deadline for the learning agreement. However, please note that you should submit your learning agreement, signed by you and your home university, before the start of your exchange period.

During the application process, we ask you to upload your learning agreement. If possible, we prefer that your home university signs it at this stage. If that is not possible, it is also acceptable to submit the signed version afterwards.

The academic year at LUT University is divided into autumn and spring semesters. Specific dates for each academic year can be found here.

Every semester starts with the orientation. Orientation is mandatory as it is intended to help you to start your studies. 

Autumn semester starts usually at end of August and ends usually middle of December. 

Spring semester starts early in January and ends usually at end of April or early in May.

Yes, the orientation is mandatory. Not participating the Orientation Days in person on-campus is for coercive reasons only. If it is your case please contact immediately incoming@lut.fi 

In case of not being able to arrive in Finland for the Orientation Days you must:

• contact incoming@lut.fi and inform about your situation and expected arrival date
• participate in the Orientation Days online
• complete the course enrolments by the given deadline
• start the online studies after the Orientation Days
• For autumn semester 2026: to be able to arrive in Finland for on-campus studies by 14th of September 

If not able to arrive at the campus by the start of the Orientation Days due to not yet having your residence permit, you must still be able to follow the ultimate deadline for arriving to campus for being able to start your studies.

Orientation Days for Exchange students

All exchange students are expected to participate in the Orientation Days as the purpose of participating is to provide all the important information for students for being able to get a smooth start for their studies.

Registering for the courses will be done during the Orientation Days while consultation with the exchange coordinator and tutors will be available.

When your LUT account is ready to be activated, you will receive instructions by email from Student IT Support Services (student.ithelpdesk@lut.fi). The email will be sent at least one week before the start of your studies. Please remember to check your spam folder as well, as the message may end up there.
