Application processes of doctoral programmes
The applicant contacts potential supervisors (usually the coordinating supervisor) in the research field well in advance to discuss the research idea and the plan for doctoral studies and research.
Junior researchers: The application for doctoral studies must be submitted during the first two months of the employment relationship. The right to study must be granted within three months from the beginning of the work contract. In case the three month deadline expires during July, the applicant must contact LUT Doctoral School well in advance.
At least two independent supervisors are appointed for all doctoral candidates. The criteria for acting as a supervisor at LUT University is available on eLUT page Supervision of doctoral studies. If the supervisors-to-be are in favour of the plan to start doctoral studies, the applicant submits the application at Studyinfo.fi. LUT University has rolling admission to doctoral education.
LUT Doctoral School checks the application package. After that the head of the doctoral programme evaluates the application by paying attention for example to the quality and feasibility of the research plan, scheduling and the contents of studies. One criterion is the availability of supervisory resources in the area of the dissertation topic, in other words that at least two supervisors can be appointed.
The vice rector for research and innovation makes a decision on granting the right to study for a doctoral degree. LUT Doctoral School takes care of sending the decision and other essential information.
The research field
The research field is the topic area of the studies, which is specified in the application for doctoral studies. The dissertation and the doctoral studies deal with the research field.
