Supervision of doctoral studies

Supervision

The coordinating supervisor must be an LUT University professor, LUT docent, person employed by LUT holding a docentship in another Finnish university or associate professor on the tenure track at LUT. A person with a doctoral degree can be appointed as a co-supervisor. LUT University offers training for new supervisors (yearly, one module in university pedagogics training).

At least two independent supervisors are appointed for all doctoral candidates. A supervisory group can also be appointed if needed.

The requirement of having at least two supervisors is also applied to students who currently have only one supervisor but who make changes in their supervisory arrangements during doctoral studies.

The doctoral programme in question makes decisions regarding changes in supervisor arrangements. For further information, please contact LUT Doctoral School.

Doctoral research assessment tool

Students and their supervisors can make use of a doctoral research assessment tool when discussing the progress in writing one's dissertation manuscript. The research assessment tool provides a common frame and terminology for discussions.

LUT Doctoral School recommends the assessment tool for all students and supervisors (see Files below).

LUT mentoring programme

In the mentoring programme alumni, who have graduated from the university, mentor the students, also known as actors. Alumni and students work in pairs making a process that emphasizes the students’ career readiness and helps defining their professional skill sets and strengths. Mentoring is mutual interaction that requires activity, commitment, openness and trust from each party.
