Cross-study between higher education institutions
What does cross-study mean?
Cross-studying means that a LUT student can complete studies at another Finnish higher education institution. This opportunity is based on agreements between universities, which apply to specific courses and student groups. The purpose of cross-studying is generally to allow students to flexibly include these studies in their own degree, for example as a minor subject or other elective studies.
Key Principles:
- Requirements: Cross-studying requires that your study right at LUT is valid and that you are registered as present.
- Study Right at the Host Institution: You will be granted a temporary study right at the host institution to complete the specified studies. During this period, you must follow the rules and regulations of the institution providing the instruction.
- Credit Transfer: The host institution will assess and record the studies you complete in its own system. After that, the credits will be transferred to LUT’s study register as studies completed elsewhere.
- Importance of the Personal Study Plan (HOPS): For degree students, it is important to ensure that the courses completed through cross-studying are included in your approved personal study plan (HOPS).
General Application Process in Sisu:
- Planning Studies in Your Personal Study Plan (HOPS): Before registering for cross-studies, you must have at least one study plan (HOPS) created in Sisu. The cross-studies must be included in your approved HOPS.
- Browsing Cross-Institutional Study Offerings:
- In Sisu, go to the "Search" page and select the "Cross-Studies" tab or the "Study Selection" tab.
- In the search view, find the section where you can select a cross-network or filter only the cross-offerings.
- You can further narrow the search results, for example, by the institution offering the teaching or by the language of instruction.
- Registering for Studies:
- You should apply for cross-studies well in advance before the course begins.
- Once you’ve found a suitable course, open the course description and go to the registration-related tab (e.g., the “Completion method” tab).
- Registration for courses offered by another university is usually done in Sisu in the same way as for LUT’s own courses.
- Remember to add the selected course to your study plan in Sisu.
If your study right requires network access, your registration will be sent to the university offering the course.
Upcoming Changes to LAB Course Registration
- LAB is transitioning to a new student information system (SISU) this summer. Please read the following details carefully regarding your course planning:
- Where are the courses? LAB’s courses are currently hidden because they will not become active in SISU until August 1, 2026. They cannot be viewed in LUT's SISU yet.
- How do I sign up? Future course registration will take place through the Cross-Institutional Study Information Service. You can find general information and updates here: Cross-study between higher education institutions | eLUT
- Waiting for a Response: Wait for a response from the host university regarding the status of your registration. If the registration fails or changes are needed, you can usually cancel it and try again.
Transfer of Completed Studies: Once you have successfully completed the course and it has been assessed, the completion will often automatically appear under the course in your study plan in Sisu.
