Starting studies
Welcome to study at LUT University!
Land of the curious
We are a community where curious people inspire curious people. The curious dive deep into their passion, and develop their thinking daily. Without curiosity, we cannot change the world. A curious person experiments, fails, and succeeds faster than others.
We address issues that matter to the world and that others may consider impossible to solve. Our campuses are located in Lappeenranta and Lahti, but our state of mind can be achieved anywhere.
Clean energy, water and air are life-giving resources for which we seek new solutions with our expertise in technology and business. We help society and businesses in their sustainable renewal.

Healthcare services for degree students
Bachelor's and Master's degree students, (doctoral and exchange students excluded) are provided with healthcare services by the Finnish Student Health Service FSHS (YTHS in Finnish). The FSHS has a full range of medical services including preventive, medical, mental and dental healthcare.
A member of the Student Union is entitled to use the services of all FSHS centers in Finland – and it is a must for all the degree students in Finland to join the Student Union.
Kela student healthcare fee for the FSHS services
Students who are entitled to use the services provided by the Finnish Student Health Service FSHS must pay a student healthcare fee to Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela).
If you are enrolled in a degree programme at a Finnish higher education institution and have registered as attending, you must pay the healthcare fee. You must pay the fee even if you are studying remotely and are not based in Finland. The exception to this is if you have social security coverage from another EU/EEA country, Switzerland, Great Britain or Northern Ireland. In this case, you do not have to pay the fee, but you can still use FSHS services. However, in such cases you should contact Kela.
If you are a foreign exchange student, you are not completing a degree at a Finnish higher education institution. In that case, you do not have to pay the healthcare fee. However, you are not entitled to use the services of the FSHS.
You must pay the healthcare fee if you come to Finland from a country outside the EU to complete a degree here. This applies even if you have taken out private health insurance to satisfy the requirements for obtaining a residence permit.
You will not be sent an invoice for the student healthcare fee; instead, you must pay the fee by following the instructions given at
The deadlines for the payment for autumn and spring semester are provided on the linked web page. The healthcare fee is confirmed on a calendar year basis.
EHIC card required from EU/EEA nationals + Swiss nationals
Students from EU/EEA countries and Switzerland must provide
when using the FSHS services.
Healthcare services for exchange students
As emergency care and hospital care are not covered by the FSHS student healthcare services policy, the non-EU/EEA citizens (Swiss citizens excluded) are required to have a personal health insurance covering the costs of acute illness and injuries.
If applying for a residence permit, you are required to provide the details of a comprehensive health insurance coverage to your application. A comprehensive insurance coverage means insurance which includes the types of treatment and costs related to municipal health care services and the health insurance system.
A residence permit can be issued only if the student has a valid health insurance coverage from a reliable and solvent insurance company or institution.
Even the EU/EEA citizens might also wish to consider a private health insurance according to their own wishes.
ESN Lappeenranta - Swisscare Health Insurance
ESN Lappeenranta, a local section of the international Erasmus Student Network, offers its members a 10% discount on Swisscare health insurances if they purchase the insurance here, along with the ESN Card: https://esnlpr.fi/about-us/esncard/
