Internship/work experience in Social Sciences
Note! The term internship will change to work experience from 1.8.2024, in accordance with the decisions of the degree programmes.
Note! You can find the necessary report templates at the bottom of this page.
Work approved for internship/work experience
Students may do their internship/work experience as an employee in an employment relationship, or they can work for their own company in a verified manner. You can apply to have your employment relationship approved as an internship/work experience if its duration is no less than four weeks of full-time work.
Any work that meets the aforementioned condition can be approved as the bachelor’s degree’s work experience, and the work does not need to be related to the field of your studies. In the master’s degree, the internship/work experience must be related to the field you are studying. A single work task and/or job certificate for a single work period cannot be used for the internships/work experience of both degrees.
Work done before the start of studies and not included in the student's previous qualifications may also be accepted as an internship/work experience at the discretion of the supervisor, unless you have already included it in another qualification (e.g., an internship/work experience you did for a previous degree cannot be used for the master’s degree)
Learning outcomes
On completion of the internship/work experience, the student will know from personal experience:
- what is paid work
- what it is like to work for an employer or an entrepreneur
- what are the basic rules of working life from the employee's and/or entrepreneur’s point of view, and
- how to work in a work community.
Report
- A report is compulsory.
- It must be written in accordance with the report form.
- The report is specific to the degree: separate reports are required for the bachelor’s and master’s degrees and therefore also different job tasks.
- If several work tasks/employment relationships/work experience are included in the application, the student must compile them into a single report (an application always contains a single report).
- The student and the university must keep the reports confidential.
Application
- Students submit a single application for approval of an internship/work experience for a degree (one application/degree).
- Students must submit the application in good time, no later than 3 months prior to the intended graduation date.
- The application complete with attachments must be returned to the degree programme’s internship coordinator in accordance with the guidelines of the training programme, either by e-mail or in Moodle
- Compulsory attachments to the application: report, copies of the job certificate or a copy of the Trade Register extract if you worked in your own company.
- If you do both internship/work experience periods in the same company, which gives you one job certificate, ensure that the certificate includes two work periods and two separate job descriptions (separate work periods and different tasks are required for the bachelor’s and master’ degrees).
- Approved internships/work experience are recorded in SISU with the grade H (approved).
Internships/work experience positions in your PSP in SISU
In degree structure internship/work experience will be included in elective studies in all Master´s programmes in Social Sciences. The maximum amount of internship/work experience is 6 ECTS cr.
Once your internship/work experience has been approved, it is recorded as approved with the grade H (approved).
An internship/work experience that will be included in elective studies is recorded in the PSP as a study draft, which is submitted for approval in SISU before the application and the work report are sent to the coordinator. The study draft is given the name ‘Työharjoittelu Work internship’. See SISU’s instructions for internships positions here.
