Application and attachments - Doctoral programmes
Fill in an application form in Studyinfo.fi and make sure you have all the required documents available before you start (please see section Files below).
Obligatory attachments:
- Doctoral study plan (separate templates for junior researchers and self-funded applicants)
- Commitment forms filled in by the supervisors (one form for each supervisor with all necessary signatures)
- Copies of higher university degree certificate and transcript of records. If your degree was awarded outside Finland, please contact LUT Doctoral School regarding the delivery of verified documents.
- Copies of Bachelor degree certificate and transcript of records
- Further information form regarding sanctions and CV from the applicant
- Further information form regarding sanctions and CV from the supervisors outside LUT University
- A copy of an international passport
To be attached, if applicable:
- A plan for supplementary studies
- Coordinating supervisor's statement of the applicant's suitability for pursuing doctoral studies
Prepare the doctoral study plan together with your supervisors-to-be, because they have to accept it before submitting your application at Studyinfo.
Study attainments included in a doctoral degree may not date back more than seven years. On special grounds an exception can be made, please see further information on the page Planning your studies. The expiration of studies after seven years should be taken into account especially if you intend to study part-time, which means that to complete your studies will take longer than the four-year target time.
Each doctoral student has to create a personal study plan (PSP) in Sisu after the right to study has been awarded. The personal study plan is the same you submit with the application for the right to study.
Instructions for compiling the plan
1. Research plan
- Economics and Business Administration: length of the research plan is 10-15 pages; a list of references must not be counted in the number of pages.
- Any use of generative AI in creating text needs to be clearly disclosed and its role in generating the document needs to be described as part of the research plan, please see AI-based tools policies at LUT University.
2. Schedule (a plan for 3-4 years)
- If you estimate that you doctoral studies will last longer than four years, please clarify the reason in the plan (for example studying part-time while working).
3. Study plan for the doctoral degree
- Minimum requirement 30 ECTS cr
- When making the study plan please read more specific information on studies.
- LUT Doctoral School recommends that all studies should be completed during the first two years of studying.
- Previously completed studies that are suitable for a doctoral degree may only be included in the doctoral degree if they have not been included in any other degree.
- Economics and Business Administration:There are also obligatory courses to be included in the degree, please see the instructions of the doctoral programme.
- Industrial Engineering and Management: studies must include 5-20 ECTS cr of general studies related to methodology or making science.
- Social Sciences: In addition to the research field studies, doctoral studies in Social Sciences must include studies from the following areas: 1) research ethics, 2) research methods and 3) open science and data management. There is also obligatory course to be included in the degree, please see the instructions of the doctoral programme.

5. Supervision plan
- The aim of the plan is to clarify general principles of good supervision and to offer a tool to agree on the essential issues of the supervision process from the student's and the supervisors' point of view.
- The supervision plan also explains the responsibilities of the student, the supervisors and other possible parties involved.
