Interruption of studies for unemployment benefit

If you consider interrupting your studies or extending an interruption to be eligible for an unemployment benefit , contact your employment office for further information.

Pursuant to legislation, a person is entitled to an unemployment benefit if he or she can prove his or her studies have been interrupted.

Pursuant to part I, chapter 2, section 11 of the Unemployment Security Act a university student’s studies have been terminated when

  • the student has graduated
  • the student has given up his or her study right
  • the student has lost his or her study right, or the study right has been cancelled
  • there is proof that the student’s studies have been interrupted for at least a year
    (no completed courses or participation in tuition for at least a year)

You can contact Student Customer Service to request a student certificate and transcript of study records to demonstrate to the employment authorities that you have interrupted your studies.
