Appeal procedures pertaining to grading

You are entitled to receive information on the grading principles applied to your study performance and you have the right to view your evaluated and graded written work or work that has been recorded in another format.

If you are not happy with the grading of your study performance, studies carried out elsewhere or competence demonstrated otherwise, you can request a revision of the grade either in writing or orally from the teacher who graded the work or the person who decided on the recognition of studies completed elsewhere.

Appeals on grading must be lodged within 14 days of the date when the grade was made available to you.

If you are not happy with the decision on your appeal, you may lodge a further appeal with the Degree Board within 14 days of the receipt of the decision.

Students dissatisfied with the assessment of their dissertation, Licentiate thesis or Master’s thesis may request for rectification directly with the degree board within 14 days of having received the assessment decision.

Degree Board

The university has a Degree Board tasked with the processing of appeals related to the assessment of study performance. The board processes matters related to study attainments that have been evaluated and graded. The Degree Board will not take a stand on the teaching, on the guidance processes or on how much the student has worked in the course, for example. The Degree Board evaluates whether the assignments in the course are assessed according to the same criteria and that no error has occurred in the assessment that would have put the student in question at a disadvantage. The Degree Board handles rectification requests related to final grades and not grades for mid-term exams.

The Degree Board only handles requests by students registered as attending, and the student may not graduate before the end of the appeal process.

The Degree Board’s decision on grading of study attainments and recognition of studies, cannot be appealed. Decisions by the Degree Board are therefore binding.

Submitting a rectification request to the Degree Board

Each student must make his/her own rectification request. The rectification request must be addressed to the Degree Board and it is sent to LUT’s records services by email: asiakirjat@lut.fi.

Make sure to specify which part of the decision you want to be rectified and on what grounds. The request must contain the following information:

student’s name and contact information
person who issued the decision that the request pertains to
date when the student received the decision
decision (in sufficient detail)
change requested by the student
grounds for the rectification request
copies of the documents as attachments when necessary
