Aims: The student is able to employ theoretical and operational skills in some specific area of applied mathematics, computing, and technical physics. Contents: The course consists of literature review, working on assignments and completing practical projects. Materials will be chosen and agreed individually according to the focus of the study module, students' interests, and research in the laboratories. The course with the same title can be included in the study programme twice when two distinct areas are covered in the projects. However, if the course is included twice, the total credits awarded can be a maximum of 6 ECTS.

Content and completion:
Doctoral student presents his/her research and explains the research methodology, the research artifacts and work in progress and receive feedback from teachers and other course participants to reflect and to improve the research work. Doctoral student engages with the research of others by reflecting on their research work, proving constructive feedback and asking questions.

After the course, a student is able to explain his/her scientific work and the main research concept(s), its reflections, reporting, and directions in a concise manner to the scientific community, as well reflect on the research work of others and give constructive feedback.

This is a recurring seminar, that a doctoral students can take several times (each instance of the course can be 1-6 ects). Typically, the seminar runs once per semester with the size of 1 ECTS. Thus, e.g., during a four-year period of doctoral studies a student could take the course up to 8 times. In special cases the size of the course instance can be up to 6 ects, for example if instead of doctoral presentations there are more interactive learning activities organized. Such instances will be made known in advance.

All doctoral students of the Software Engineering department are encouraged to participate in this seminar course multiple times.

Content and completion:
Doctoral student selects an advanced topic on which they produce an academic outcome (typically an academic report or presentation) and then presents this outcome to the supervisors and potentially the other course participants. The intent of the academic outcome is for the student to gain deeper understanding on selected advanced topics related to software engineering, which then allows them to apply the learned skills and knowledge in their own thesis work and the doctoral dissertation process. 

This is a recurring course, that the doctoral students can take multiple times (each instance of the course is typically 1-3 ects). Typically, these credits are awarded on larger personally tailored academic work assignments agreed with the supervisors, or from participation to a specially tailored doctoral student one-time course or workshop focusing on the suitable software engineering topics or research methods. As this course can be taken several times, the student may gain up to 10 study credits with this activity.

When starting this course, the schedule, the exact academic work, and the number of awarded credits is agreed separately between the supervisors and the doctoral student.

Aims:

Upon completion of the study draft the student is expected to be able to:

1. choose appropriate research methods for a research problem in a given field of environmental technology,

Contents: Producing a research report on a given subject on the basis of a literature review. The subject of the research can also be assigned by an enterprise.

The course is intended for MSc and PhD Students of the Physics and Electrical engineering programmes. The course will be held by Professor Francisco Rogelio Palomo Pinto from the Department of Electronic Engineering at the University of Seville, Spain and a Visiting Professor at LUT.

Learning outcomes:
By the end of this course, the students will be able to design radiation-tolerant digital systems by programming AMD FPGAs using Vivado software, calculate Linear Energy Transfer (LET) and model particle interactions in matter using SRIM and predict radiation-induced faults and electrical performance degradation using LTspice software.

Practical information: 
Please bring your personal laptop for the hands-on sessions and have the Vivado 2025, SRIM and LTspice softwares installed beforehand.
Professor Palomo Pinto will also have “free” morning sessions, where any additional topics can be discussed. 

Background information:
The research focus of Professor Palomo Pinto is heavily centered on radiation effects on sensors and electronics, as well as development of advanced particle detectors. His academic and research career focuses on electronic systems for aerospace applications, instrumentation, and signal conditioning. He is an active contributor to the DRD3 CERN's collaboration, focused on developing detectors capable of withstanding the extreme environments of future colliders and the electronics and on-detector processing. Previously he participated in RD50 and RD53 collaborations. He is also a member of the CMS collaboration, associated from a technical institute.
