Supervision rules

Supervisors and examiners

Supervisors of the master’s thesis

A. The academic supervisor at the university:

  • is responsible for supervising the development of the project into a master’s thesis in Industrial Engineering and Management
  • usually also acts as the first examiner

Because of the topic, additional supervision from another degree programme may be required. In this case, the first examiner agrees on additional supervision, not the student.

It is important that the student contacts the professor of his or her degree programme at the beginning of the master’s thesis project to agree on supervision.

B. The supervisor at the company/organisation

  • is responsible for guidance related to the company/organisation and the project
  • is the person responsible for the development project, for example, related to the thesis

Examiners of the master’s thesis (2)

The master’s thesis is assessed by two examiners. The first examiner:

  • is a professor, assistant professor or docent from LUT’s degree programme in Industrial Engineering and Management (docentship may have been granted by another university).
  • is typically the primary academic supervisor of the thesis (responsible for helping steer the work into an academic thesis).
  • is always appointed in connection with the application for the approval of the topic.
  • approves the topic and decides on the second examiner, evaluates the work and the maturity test and grades them.

In the degree programme in Industrial Engineering and Management, the second examiner

  • is usually appointed at the assessment stage; the first examiner finds and appoints the second examiner.
  • usually has a doctorate or is completing a doctoral degree in the field of the thesis and is in an employment relationship with LUT.

Students of Industrial Engineering and Management do not have to provide the name of the second examiner in the abstract of the thesis or in the assessment request (1B form, download the form here) if it is not known at the time the manuscript is completed.

The examiners prepare a statement on the thesis, which includes a proposal for the grade. The dean of the School of Engineering Science (LENS) decides on the approval of the thesis and the grade on the basis of the examiners’ statement.
