Chairperson's Greetings 2026
It is a pleasure to greet you as you begin your journey here at LUT University.
University is all about learning and becoming a well-rounded individual and there's no better place to do so than among a group of like-minded students. Here at LUT, we have a vibrant student community and I'm confident you'll find students who share your interests.
From small relaxing cultural events to managing an organization's finances, project management and national advocacy, the opportunities to develop the exact skills you seek are limitless. Along with skills, trust is important in Finland's industries and it is built gradually through continuous effort; who knows, the person you were cleaning up after an event with or working on an educational policy or social policy paper with may have a good job opportunity for you in the future, trust and networking begin on the first day.
I personally moved to Finland four and a half years ago, knowing I wanted to study electrical engineering but having no idea where to go. I took my time thinking, completed military service and then began applying to universities. The first one I applied to was LUT University, I got in and I had no idea what to expect. My first event, I noticed that the organisers needed some assistance, so I lent a hand and soon I was asked if I wanted to be the Sauna Master Officer, which I accepted because the title sounded amusing.
I quickly realised that I enjoy helping the local community thrive, so I naturally progressed (it wasn't always easy, but it was always rewarding), never expecting to end up as Chair of the Student Union's Board. I've made some amazing friends along the way who I know I'll have for the rest of my life, as well as learned skills I only learnt from applying myself to the student community, so I believe it's made me a more well-rounded person and my goal is for you to have the same opportunity as I did.
Freshmen always bring new ideas and energy to the community which keeps it developing, so have some fun and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
Best regards,
Ryan Coombes
