We instruct our exchange students in their acceptance letters on how to accept a study place. Students can expect to receive the acceptance letters within 2-4 weeks after the application deadline.

After your acceptance, your exchange coordinator will sign your Learning Agreement or Digital Learning Agreement. However, please note that if you have received comments on your Learning Agreement and corrections have been requested in your acceptance letter, you must update the document, obtain the required signatures from your home university, and then send it to your exchange coordinator at LUT, who will sign it.

Please also note that you should have a preliminary Learning Agreement signed by all parties before your exchange begins. If modifications are needed, they can be made throughout the semester.

Duo MFA:

1. Install the Duo Mobile app on your phone.
2. Activate Duo Mobile by clicking the activation link sent to your email after you have activated your LUT account.

When your LUT account is ready to be activated, you will receive instructions by email from Student IT Support Services (student.ithelpdesk@lut.fi). The email will be sent at least one week before the start of your studies. Please remember to check your spam folder as well, as the message may end up there.

The instructions will tell you how to register with id.lut.fi. Before you can use the LUT services, you must register with id.lut.fi. You can register using your bank details, mobile certificate or ID card. Registration and activation of user IDs is done at https://id.lut.fi 

• Students who are able to use Finnish e-identification methods (such as online banking ID credentials) can activate their LUT account here: https://id.lut.fi 
• Students who cannot use Finnish e-identification methods can find instructions for activating their LUT account at the LUT ID and signing in -page.

Your user ID will be used as a username when logging into the LUT systems (for example the online learning platform Moodle).

After you have activated your LUT account, you will receive an email to activate the Duo Mobile (MFA).

Courses at LUT University are delivered flexibly, utilizing digital solutions. Various electronic platforms and materials are used in the learning process and course contents. Students connect to the learning environment using their own mobile devices, such as a laptop or a tablet with a keyboard. LUT provides a wireless network on campus as well as support for using your own device.

Your studies will begin with an information-packed Orientation Days which are an integral part of the studies at LUT University. The orientation is mandatory.

Orientation Days for Exchange students

All exchange students are expected to participate in the Orientation Days as the purpose of participating is to provide all the important information for students for being able to get a smooth start for their studies.

Registering for the courses will be done during the Orientation Days while consultation with the exchange coordinator and tutors will be available.

Not participating the Orientation Days in person on-campus is for coercive reasons only.

In case of not being able to arrive in Finland for the Orientation Days you must:

• contact incoming@lut.fi and inform about your situation and expected arrival date
• participate in the Orientation Days online
• complete the course enrolments by the given deadline
• start the online studies after the Orientation Days
• to be able to arrive in Finland for on-campus studies by 14th of September for the autumn semester 2026

The issues and preparations on this checklist for starting your studies must still be taken care of by the given deadlines even if not making it to the Orientation Days in person.

If not able to arrive at the campus by the start of the Orientation Days due to not yet having your residence permit, you must still be able to follow the ultimate deadline for arriving to campus for being able to start your studies.

The deadline for autumn semester 2026 arrival is 14.9.2026. However, these ultimate deadlines are for special case scenarios only, and students are expected to be on campus to partake in orientation during August.

Students who start their studies on the Lappeenranta campus can apply for student accommodation directly from the Lappeenranta Student Housing Foundation (LOAS) after receiving an acceptance letter from LUT. Please visit the LOAS website for detailed application instructions.

LOAS processes housing applications in the order in which they are received. Hundreds of students start their studies in Lappeenranta every autumn and spring and apply for accommodation.

Please note! You have to accept the first apartment offered to you. If you reject the offer or it expires, LOAS will not be able to offer you any more apartments in the near future.

Lappeenrannan Asuntopalvelu Oy is a reliable and secure landlord owned by the Lappeenranta city. We own approximately 200 buildings and 5000 rental apartments in different parts of Lappeenranta.

The apartments for students are shared (mainly two students per apartment) and furnished only with a bed and a mattress. This option is available nowadays more widely for new students than before, because accommodation and especially shared apartments are hard to find when LOAS cannot offer accommodation for all new students.

Housing application to Lahden Talot

Students who start their studies in programmes on the Lahti campus can apply for student accommodation in Lahti. LUT cooperates with the local housing organisation, Lahden Talot Oy.

Lahden Talot processes housing applications in the order in which they are received. If you apply by the deadline (mentioned on the acceptance letter), you will have better chances of receiving accommodation at the beginning of the semester.

Hundreds of students start their studies in Lahti every autumn and apply for accommodation during the summer.

Citizens of the Nordic countries need not to apply for a residence permit. 

Kindly note that all exchange students have to register at the Digital and Population Data Services Agency. Please find the instructions and timetable for the registration from Student's cheklist item number 19. 

If you are staying more than 90 days uninterrupted in Finland, you also need to register EU citizen's right of residence. Read more here. 

Citizens of other EEA countries need to register their right of residence in Finland if they plan to stay in Finland for more than 3 months non-stop. They can do the registration at the Finnish Immigration Service within 90 days of their arrival to Finland. Please see information on http://www.migri.fi/eu_registration 

Please kindly note that all have to register at the Digital and Population Data Services Agency if they stay in Finland longer than six months. Please find the instructions and timetable for the registration from Student's cheklist item number 19. 

Persons from outside the Nordic and the EEA countries who intend to stay in Finland for more than 3 months need a residence permit which should be acquired before arrival in Finland at the nearest Finnish embassy or consulate. Finnish Immigration Service Information for Students​​ - how to apply for the residence permit

If you have been granted a residence permit on the basis of studies by some other EU Member State than Finland and if you are covered by a programme or an agreement specified in the Finnish act on residence permits for students. You can carry out part of your studies in Finland for a period up to 360 days. You must submit a mobility notification to the Finnish Immigration Service. Students from the EU/EEA countries are entitled to public health care services in Finland, if they are covered by health insurance in their own country.  More information about Finland's public and private healthcare.

Make sure that you have your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with you.

A European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is needed for public health care services in Finland. The card ensures that you will get the same access to public sector health care as the local residents (e.g. a doctor, a pharmacy, a hospital or a health care centre), covering mainly emergency treatment in the event of an illness or injury, and other medically necessary treatment. Any costs you incur outside the system you will have to pay on your own. 

Citizens of the EU/EEA countries must also have a private insurance in addition to the European Health Insurance Card. The European Health Insurance Card is not valid during your travels to and from Finland and during any excursions to a third country outside of the EU.

Students from outside the EU/EEA must have private insurance to cover the duration of the visa / residence permit and the Schengen area before they enter Finland. More information about Finland's public and private healthcare.

Remember to bring the valid insurance policy with you. 

The insurance must cover the treatment and health care provided by public health care services, cases of illness or accident, and include travel costs to home country as well as liability insurance.
 
Taking insurance from an international insurance company is recommended. For travel outside Finland, please make sure the insurance is valid in these countries as well.
