All international students are asked to provide LUT Student Services with their arrival information, including

• full name
• mobile number
• arrival date and time
• means of transportation

New students will be a sent an arrival questionnaire during the summer, which has to be filled out and submitted no later than three weeks before the date of arrival.

For a smooth transition into orientation days and your first study weeks, students are recommended to arrive to campus city 1-4 days before orientation begins.

LUT tutors are available for you a in the weeks before orientation...

Your tutor will help you with practical matters during your first days in Lappeenranta and at LUT. You will receive your tutor’s contact information by e-mail around Mid-August, before your departure for Finland. If you have not received your tutor's contact information at the latest on 20th of August, contact tuutorointisihteeri@lut.fi so that you can be added to a tutoring group.

We will start assigning tutors once most of the newcomers have provided their arrival information.

The LUT Key Service will be available to you

LUT Key Service sets up point at the Lappeenranta Travel Center (Matkakeskus) during orientation. Once you have arrived to Lappeenranta, you can go and pick up your key from the service point. After you have received your keys, you may make your way to your accommodation and meet with your peer tutor.

For the Key Service personnel and your tutor to be able to meet you in Lappeenranta, you will need to submit your arrival details well in advance. After the arrival information, there's no need to confirm your arrival with key service as the key service is already informed about the arrival times. If you will not be living in LOAS housing, no Key Service will be available, and your tutor will meet you at the university at a mutually agreed time. 

LUT Key Service operates 18.8-31.8.2025 from 9 am to 9 pm. 

Please note that to get a tutor and your apartment key upon arrival, you need to give LOAS permission to give your LOAS address and key to LUT. LOAS will ask for permission during the accommodation application process. 

The Key Service is offered only to students arriving from outside of Finland. Students from within Finland collect their keys from LOAS.

When you arrive in Lahti, you will be met by your tutor – a senior student in Lahti. Tutor's help will be available between 8:00 in the morning and 24:00 midnight starting 4 days prior the orientation. Your tutor will help you with practical matters during your first days in Lahti and at LUT. 

You will receive your tutor’s contact information by e-mail in early August. You will need to submit your arrival details well in advance for the tutor to be able to meet you in Lahti.

Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport

Flights to Helsinki-Vantaa (HEL) airport are available from most countries and big cities worldwide, and is the most common way for international students to reach Finland. The easiest and recommended way to reach Lappeenranta by taking a train. Trains in Finland are modern, faster than bus rides, and offer much more comfort and flexibility.

To make it to a station where you can take a train to Lappeenranta, you should take an HSL Commuter Train (P Train) to either Pasila, Tikkurila or the Helsinki Central Railway Station. The Central Railway Station will add a few more minutes to your train ride compared to locations like Tikkurila, but it is recommended for new students arriving to Finland due to its simple layout and ease to find.

At the Railway Station

Once you are at the right inter-city train station, take the long-distance train, which brings you directly to Lappeenranta. Use the website www.vr.fi to find the trains and buy tickets, or check the video on how to book a ticket in the VR Matkalla app. You can also buy tickets at a green ticket machines located around the train station.

The last point of arrival is usually written on the screens at the train station, so you might see Imatra or Joensuu. This is because Lappeenranta is usually a mid-way stop during the train's ride, and the train will continue its way to other cities north after its stop to Lappeenranta, so be prompt with getting off the train when it stops in Lappeenranta. 

The screen and announcement for the train will announce in Finnish (Lappeenranta), Swedish (Villmanstrand) and English (Lappeenranta) once you are near. If you hear anything mentioning Lappeenranta or Villmanstrand, you are close.

Lappeenranta Airport

Lappeenranta has its own international airport (LPP) where you can take a direct, low-cost flight to Lappeenranta if you live in Milan, Italy, or have a connecting flight with Milan Bergamo Airport. You can check information about available routes from Lappeenranta from https://www.flightradar24.com/data/airports/lpp/routes, and tickets are sold by RyanAir, the only commercial company that uses Lappeenranta airport for flights.

Taking a Bus

Direct Onnibus routes connect Helsinki and Lappeenranta. The Helsinki bus terminal is in Kamppi, 5 minutes’ walk from Helsinki Central Railway Station. However, the bus travels longer than the train and has restrictions on luggage. So, if you travel with many suitcases, you should avoid this option.

Furthermore, short near-city trains exists that solely travel to Lahti and are partly operated by VR and HSL. These trains are useful although might have more stops between Helsinki and Lahti in a few other locations where inter-city trains do not stop, prolonging the trip by a few minutes.

The city of Kouvola is located in the Kymenlaakso region, about 150 km to the east of the Finnish capital, Helsinki.

By car

Take motorway 4 from Helsinki to Kouvola. In Tikkurila the road changes to number 7 and later to number 6.

The city of Mikkeli is located in South Savo, some 230 km northeast of Finland’s capital, Helsinki.

By car

Take motorway number 4 from Helsinki to Mikkeli. The road will chance to number 5 after city of Heinola.

Orientation is an integral part of the studies at LUT University. New students are expected and required to participate in the orientation, as the purpose of the orientation is to provide important information for students to get a proper start to their studies. During the orientation, students can also choose and sign up for the courses in consultation with study counselors, tutors and student advisors.

In case a student cannot arrive in Finland for orientation 

To be able to arrive in Finland for on-campus studies later by the ultimate deadline, student should 

• participate in the Orientation Days online*
• complete the course enrollments by the given deadline
• start the online studies after the Orientation Days
• take care of the preparations on Checklist for New Degree Students by the given deadlines.

Teaching starts after the orientation week, and the registration for the courses ends at the week following orientation. After this electronic registration is no longer available. See instructions on late enrollments on the link above.

Students arriving after the orientation days are entitled to a welcoming package and partly entitled to the services of a tutor. Each new student is appointed a tutor. The appointed tutor has reserved a good amount of time to help the new students with these practical matters before and during the orientation week – however, it should be considered that once the studies commence, the tutor is also studying, and is not as available as during orientation days.

Students from outside Finland need to consider that after the orientation week there is no LUT Key service, and they need to pick up the keys to their apartment from Lappeenranta Student Housing Foundation (LOAS) by themselves. If the LOAS office is closed when you arrive, the student should arrange accommodation such as hotel themselves and pick up the key at their earliest convenience.

LUT's refund policy for tuition fees:

Tuition fees can be refunded or transferred to the next academic year only for newly admitted international students who inform LUT’s Student Services that they are renouncing their right to study or postponing the start of their studies to the following autumn.

No tuition fees are refunded after 30 September – not even to students who receive a negative residence permit decision. If the university receives no notification from a student by 30 September, the tuition fee will automatically cease to be refundable. The deadline is absolute, and no case-by-case decisions will be made.

Deadlines for arrival:

In addition, each year students have a clear arrival deadline. Students need to be on campus, and have begun studies by the end of the deadline, and there are no exceptions to this policy. Furthermore, the enrollment for academic year, enrollment for courses, online orientation and starting studies independently must be done before the arrival deadline for the student to be able to continue their studies after arrival.

The exact deadlines for the programmes can be found listed below. The deadline is 15.9.2025 for every other program but computational engineering's deadline for bachelor programmes is 1.9.2025. However, these ultimate deadlines are for special case scenarios only, and students are expected to be on campus to partake in orientation during the last weeks of August.

NOTE: The tuition fee is returned/transferred to the next academic year only if you inform about your postponement or cancellation to LUT Student Customer Service at opinto@lut.fi by 30 September. There will be no refund or transfer for the tuition fee if you do not inform the mentioned teams about the postponement or the cancellation by 30 September as requested even if getting a negative decision on for your residence permit.
