Tuition fee - FAQ
The first-year tuition fee must be paid during the LUT application process and the payment deadline is defined in your admission letter. Please note that if you are required to apply for a Residence Permit and to pay a tuition fee, your RP application process will be on hold until you have paid the tuition fee or are able to show the funding for it.
The next year’s tuition fee payment deadline is May 31st. You will receive the payment instructions to your e-mail during the Spring semester. You are not able to enroll for the next semester, before the payment has been made.
Citizens of non-EU/EEA countries (excluding Switzerland) are required to pay the LUT tuition fee for each academic year.
Students can be exempted from payment only with certain types of Residence Permit card. All exemptions are explained here: https://elut.lut.fi/en/completing-studies/tuition-fee/exemptions-tuition-fee

If you deliver a copy of your Finnish Residence Permit Card that exempts you from paying the fee within August 1-July 31 (= during the academic year), your exemption of Tuition fee will be counted to start from the beginning of the next semester. (Example: If you receive your residence permit in October, your exemption will begin 1.1. and your payment for spring semester may be refunded.)
The tuition fee is always charged on a semester basis until the end of your graduation semester. If you have paid the tuition fee for the whole year and graduate during the Autumn semester, the Spring semester fee is refundable. Graduation in the middle of the semester does not entitle you to a partial refund.
If you finish your work at the very end of the semester, you must apply for graduation before the semester ends. If your official graduation exceeds the deadline of December / July you will have to pay the tuition fee for the next semester.
Completing all course work does not exempt you from the next semester fee, even if you only work on your thesis.
Yes, you do have to pay the tuition fee even if going for exchange studies or for an internship abroad.

Apply for a residence permit
An international degree student must generally have a valid passport and, in the case of the majority of non-European citizens, a residence permit in order to enter and study in Finland.
As it can take several months for your residence permit to be issued, we highly recommend you to start the application process for your residence permit immediately after deciding to accept your place at LUT.
You are required to apply for a Finnish personal identity code when applying for a residence permit. To apply for the personal identity code, simply ask to be registered in the Finnish Population Information System on your residence permit application. Having a personal identity code facilitates e.g. payment of salaries, banking and access to health care.
Where to apply for a residence permit?
Submit your application electronically at enterfinland.fi/eServices. You can also submit your application to a Finnish Embassy/ Consulate in your home country or in a country in which you are legally residing.
Applying electronically is the fastest way to obtain a decision concerning your application. Due to biometrics, fingerprints are collected from all applicants.
All students are, without exception, required to visit a Finnish Embassy/ Consulate in person to give their fingerprints. Your application will not be processed before you have given your biometric details at an Embassy/Consulate.
Bring the originals of all your documents with you to the Embassy/Consulate, even if you have submitted your application electronically. The Finnish Immigration Service (MIGRI) will order a biometric residence permit card if a positive decision is made. It takes one to two weeks on average for the card to arrive at the Embassy/Consulate and there are no possibilities for expediting the delivery.
What is the meaning of the LUT certificate of admission when applying for a residence permit?
A residence permit may be granted if the applicant has been admitted as a full-time student to a Finnish university and has a valid passport. Therefore, you must present the original LUT certificate of admission in the Finnish Embassy/Consulate. The degree which you intend to complete and the approximate duration of studies are mentioned in the certificate of admission.
Why do you need proof of financing for your living expenses?
In addition to proving that you have been accepted to study at LUT and, if applicable, that you have paid the tuition fee or received a scholarship from LUT, you must also be able to prove that your funds will cover your expenses in Finland during your studies.
Before the residence permit can be granted, you must prove that you have 6 720 € per year available (a bank deposit, an official scholarship, a loan, etc.) for transfer to your account for study purposes.
A written guarantee of sponsorship from a private person such as family member, friend or employer is not accepted. Kindly contact the nearest Finnish diplomatic mission for more detailed instructions.
As a rule, foreign citizens do not qualify for student financial aid from the Social Insurance Institution of Finland in the same way as Finnish citizens. On average, a student’s living expenses (housing, food, transportation) are estimated to be around 700 € per month. In addition to this, students must cover their travel expenses and health insurance policies.
Why is student health insurance required?
Every student submitting a residence permit application must attach details of comprehensive health insurance coverage to their application. Comprehensive insurance coverage means insurance which includes the types of treatment and costs related to municipal health care services and the health insurance system.
A residence permit can be granted only if the student has valid health insurance coverage from a reliable and solvent company or institution.
For more information, please see the website of the Finnish Immigration Service (MIGRI) migri.fi/en.
LUT has negotiated health insurance packages for LUT students with the MARSH/SIP insurance company. If you are interested in them, please see the MARSH/SIP website at sipinsurance.eu and select SIP Integral health care cover.
The website will provide you all necessary information on the insurance coverage and the rates. In any questions about the MARSH insurance, please contact MARSH directly.
